Beautiful photo of gorgeous mexicana country Dan, thanks much for sharing this one. To think that one of my favorite snakes lives there... just fantastic stuff!

Yeah, it's beautiful and interesting, but it gets cold as a mother at night, even in summer. It's a pretty high elevation. The day time high temp was maybe 80-82. And that lasted only a couple hours. It rained a lot when we were there - it was raw and damp. It's pretty windy too. At night a thick fog would roll in, the wind picks up, and the temp really drops. Ideally, you need a winter coat at night. After experiencing Mex mex habitat, I have a whole new appreciation for those snakes.

Interesting that they have such a wide range of conditions to choose from, which explains why they choose to live where they do. What seems rather harsh to us, is simply providing them with everything they need. Large rock masses present that retain and release heat very well, with a wide range of cooler temps available when needed. And sufficient moisture available, as I'm sure a reasonable amount is also stored and present below the surface where their colonies exist.

It is quite amazing, the extremes these creatures are able to tolerate. Reptiles in general are quite resilient, but I think more than anything they are very clever animals.
