Is everybody still broke from Xmas or what?

RyanT Jan 21, 2006 11:33 PM

I've noticed the same ads in the classifieds since around Thanksgiving. People waiting on tax returns like me? I didn't notice last year this being a slow time for the "market". Would be nice to see things pick up soon. Then again I'm probably totally wrong and it just looks slow to me. No need to compose a list of what you sold in the last quarter.

I've been in the hobby for 12 years. It's been my experience that this has always been a slow time of year. It used to be that I looked forward to this time of year. I was working with colubrids and they would all be cooling. Nice break from all the feeding and cleaning. Now I only have a few colubrids and mostly balls, so I have to work all year long.
The last couple of years we've been able to cover Christmas expenses without going so far into debt that it takes us the next 6 months or longer to pay it off. Not this year. We bought a new car for our daughter. I'll be window shopping for at least the next 6 months.

there are a whole lot more balls out there every year .....

it takes alot longer to sell them all out......

couple years ago you could take a female ball to a show and sell it before the door opened......now they are all over the place all year long ..not just for the one importing season.....

...alot of people already have what they want or have room for so they are selling rather than buying too.......

Even a year ago the females were selling for 3x's what they are now.

You now see ads for "cooled" females 1300grams for $250 that sit and no one buys.

Last year they were 900gram $450 and flying out the door.

the rest of the industry is doing fine...other snakes and lizards are selling just like they always have.

all the get rich quick schemers got a dose of reality last year and have no money to invest now. their spending what little money they made on rodents to feed all the snakes their sitting on.

the only ones making big money off the ball python craze is rodent breeders. haha
