Brumation techniques?

reako45 Jan 22, 2006 12:09 AM

I know alot of guys on this forum breed kings. I was just wondering what brumation techniques were used. I heard a friend of mine used a cooler and I'd heard a few people used their garages or basements/cellars. I'd like to get into breeding, but since I live in California, I'm figuring it'd be difficult to get a room and keep it mid 50's for an entire 8-12 weeks, especially starting @ the beginning of Dec. This Dec here in SoCal our temps fluctuated between highs of high 50's to low 80's, so it's not easy keeping a room in the house @ suggested brumating temps.

I live in So Cal too and had similar issues. Here are some ways to deal with it:

North-facing rooms tend to be much cooler.
Floors are much cooler, especially tile.

A plywood box lined with 1-1/2" thick styrene foam on a garage floor will stay fairly cool, and the inside temp will change temps much slower than the outside temps. This is a very effective way to brumate in So Cal.

For getula, you don't need the temps consistently 55 deg for 12 weeks. It can fluctuate some.
