Worried

volgate Jan 22, 2006 12:22 AM

How long should it take the leopard gecko before it needs to eat after coming from the pet store. It has been 3 days and it doesn't seem to have eaten anything (it's a baby). Should I be worried? What steps can I take? Should I take the Gecko back to the store and go to a breeder? (was looking at Amazon Reptile Center) I just don't know if I have bought a sick lizard and am worried about it. Thanks for your help.

if the gecko ate at the pet shop, you should check your enclosure temperature and humidity and level it as it is on the pet shop, then slowly(month by month) change the temp. and hum. so that the gecko can adapt.

or you can try smaller food items(crickets, etc).

It is absolutely normal for a new leo to go a week before eating. Moving is very stressful for them and it takes time for them to settle in. But with it being a baby you do want it to eat as soon as it will. Make sure your temps on top of the substrate on the warm side are between 88-93 degrees. If they aren't don't slowly move them up, do it now. If the temps are too low your Leo will refuse to eat because it can't properly digest it's food.

Make sure you are using the correct size crickets, if they are too small your baby may very well ignore them, if they are too big, same thing. Offer crickets that are between 1/4"-1/3". I'm guessing with you stating you have a baby this size will be appropriate. That is what I feed my leos from hatchlings to about 2 months old. Also you can leave a small shallow dish of mealworms in the tank at all times, try to pick out & offer the smallest ones. Just replace them daily with fresh mealworms. Keep a count of how many you put in the dish so you'll know if any were eaten Good Luck & keep us updated on your baby's progress !!!
