New Jersey Herps

Grunngg Jan 22, 2006 12:31 AM

Are there any Herp societies at all in Jersey? Preferably South Jersey. Also, does anyone know of any Herp shows in Jersey or the Philadelphia area? Thanks.

I dont think NJ has one anymore. If there is I cant find it. Im in South NJ as well. I did find an address, but no website. If you find any info, post it, if you will. Fish&Game didnt offer any info either. As for shows?....Hamburg PA, is on Feb. 25th., and be sure to check on here under Upcoming Events, it lists all the current shows and dates and locations near us.

It sucks they aren't around anymore. It would be kinda cool if we were able to start one. I doubt that's even able to be done, though. What show do you think will be better? The one in Hamburg, or the one in Havre De Grace? The one in Havre De Grace is on the 11th and is supposed to have like 80 tables or something.

Yeah, it does suck. I would like to find more herpers in South NJ at least, that has the time for discussion and what-not. But everyone I know is always busy, prolly why there is no society now, hard to find the time I suppose. Harve de Grace? That show to me is......depends I guess. Lot of people show up for feeders and supplies, and since its-maybe every month, it isnt always booming. But I have been there when it is crowded, all depends. Guess you just have to go a few times and see what oyu think. Its a quick drive from here. And Hamburg?...Always crowded to me. Lots of variety....hot as heck in there to, but I like going every once in a while......hate the drive though..but they have quite a few vendors and are usually pretty packed. Pays to get there EARLY and see what you can before the crowd comes. Depends on what your looking for also. I luv Blood Pythons, so Hamburg is better for me, Harve de Grace has table after table of Royals/Balls and maybe 1 perosn selling Blood Pythons. So, yeah, it all depends on what your into. But you should try and go to both if you can. Makes for a good day out, cant beat all the reps!!!!

Yes, lots of frogs and lizards. And Scorps?...You want to go to the Hamburg Show then. They allow venomous species there. Unless they changed it, far as I know they didn't though.

Hamburg has all sorts of invertabrates. You really have a variety of bugs if that is what you are interested. Hamburg does have a lot of variety of any reptiles and amphibians too. You just have to walk around and scan everything before you decide to buy something because you can buy something at one of the first tables and then say oh i should have gotten this one. So patients is the best virtue at Hamburg. If you do come to hamburg come down and check out our table -- The Metropolitan Herpetological Society. We just started up in Staten Island, N.Y. I don't know where you are in NJ but maybe you can even make some of our meetings.

Its a shame there isnt more herp lovers in S. Jersey. I think maybe its because of the income level at least in Cumberland county. Herp ownership and care can get very expensive. Most pet stores in the area are really only interested in making a profit and have incompetent staff. I think most of the people in this area that buy herps buy them on a wim or because an 8 year old thinks it looks cool, then after a week or two they lose interst. I get most of my big ticket items online because even after shipping its less expensive, the prices in the local pet store are ridiculous.I now own a bearded dragon and a eastern painted turtle, i also had a savannah monitor wich I rescued from a pet store and a emerald swift. If anyone finds anything out about a society please inform I just started to hang out in theses forums mostly the turtle, bearded dragon, monitor and tegu forums. As far as a herp show nearby there will be one in Phila. Valley Forge conv. center King of prussia PA. On Sept 2 and 3 Check it out on www.philadelphiareptileexpo.com Good luck and keep herping!
