Anyone finding snakes in TX?

wesss Jan 22, 2006 12:35 AM

Just wondering if there was anything moving with all this warm weather we have had? I know Ive been seeing turtles crossing the roads, havent seen any snakes though.

The last snake I saw was on Christmas day, a Rat Snake. Other then that all I've seen are toads and turtles.

Its been relatively slow down here considering how warm the weather has been as of late. I've seen the following the few times I have gone out this year:
Nerodia rhombifer
Many Elaphe obsoleta
Thamnophis proximus
Agkistrodon contortrix
Agkistrodon piscivorus
Virginia striatula
Storeria dekayi

The earliest ive seen triangulum and getula down here is mid february, so hopefully things will pick up shortly.

I last saw getula on Thanksgiving weekend. I'd imagine I could turn some up now if I headed to the coast but may aswell just wait until early march when its really good. My holbrooki spot on the westside of houston is being bulldozed as I write this. Six more months of college here and im gone, I cant wait to get leave. Let me know if you come down this way!

Not to bad considering how early in the year it is, I havent got out and went looking yet this year. So do you still have that great looking speckled you posted pix of last year? Hope you have a great herpfilled spring!

I still have that particular snake and several more from that locale. They did not do anything for me last year, but the male was rather young then. Hopefully this time!

I have only seen a single DOR bullsnake south of San Antonio. That's my only snake for the year so far. Of course, I really haven't looked either.

Thanx for the replies! So when yall gonna start looking this year? Anyone have any trips planed? I would like to do some herping in south TX this year, would like to get together with someone who could show me around down there.

I was considering south Texas in March but is SO dry the herping is really slow right now. That doesn't mean you wouldn't find stuff, just that you might have trouble finding all the good stuff.

If they get a 6 inches of rain in February, things might change.
