Potential serious proble, right off the bat...

spider_guy Jan 22, 2006 05:58 AM

Hello, my name is Kevin and I plan on becoming very active here. I finally purchased my Boas...

1.0 Adult Proven Anery
1.0 Adult Proven Het Albino
1.0 '05 DH Sunglow
0.1 '04 Albino
0.1 Adult Proven Normal

Now, the problem. Upon receiving the animals, I notice what appears to be some sort of absess on the Adult Normal female's nose. She also has a terrible wheeze, similar to a tire losing air. I have caught her "Star Gazing" on two occasions, but she may have been simply looking up. I noticed also that the Anery male was making a bit of a hiss when I got him out. He was kept with the female before I got him. His "wheeze" is a lot more rare than the female's and nowhere NEAR as loud. To be honest, I suspect that he was just puffing at me since I was handling him.

I admit, I am very new to Boas, but I do honestly want advice, I am here seeking information to help my snakes, and I plan to get them to a Vet ASAP. I would simply like any information possible, or advice. Thank you all very much for your time and help.

Kevin R

It sounds like a respitory infection in both of them. Until you can get to a vet, you should turn the heat up a bit. I would get them to the vet tomorrow. I am no expert, but I have read this several times lately in the forums. Good luck. Let us know what happens. You can do a search on the forum. Type in respitory or RI. You can read the posts on this subject. Derek

Get them to a vet and turn up the heat in there inclosure. What kind of package where they shipped in and what was weather like. Where heat packs included in the boxes?

breathing they will often tilt their head up.
Turn their heat up to about 95, until you can get them in.
Some develop RI when they are cooled for breeding.
Good luck with them.

Well, I have their heat in a 75g tank up to 100 degrees (heatpad). I will be taking them to the vet within the next day or so. If it was RI from cooling, how dangerous is it? I don't want to lose my precious Boas...Also, thank you all so much for your advice.

RI response can vary between snakes and how healthy they were before getting one, etc. But, generally speaking, they can go downhill fast, RIs can and often are fatal if not treated. Too, if you wait too long to treat, they can develop permanent symptoms. So, it is important that they be treated early.
Good Luck!

Well, after this much time on her heatpad and whatnot, her massive wheeze has gone down dramatically, and I believe that the Anery is either fine or very close, as it only wheeze/hisses when I handle him or if I am touching him. The vet opens up in a couple hours and I am calling. I hope they either do reptiles or know a number for me to call. The female has stopped "Star Gazing" altogether to my knowledge. I'll get back this evening with another report, most likely.
