Less active, not pooping, and eating less - Do Uros brumate?

bmulcahy Jan 22, 2006 01:26 PM

I got a Mali Uro for my class in November and he was very active, ate a lot and pooped even more. Over the Holidays I brought him home and set him up in a new set-up. Since then he eats less, hardly poops(twice a week at best versus every day before)and stays in his hide most of the day. He hasn't lost any size and looks the same. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

uros do slow down in the winter. none of mine fully brumate but they do wake up later and go to bed earlier. helga, hugo, stew and xoco have all been in bed since 4 pm, so lazy!

the other thing is that he could have parasites. that can cause them to stop eating and be less active. you said you bought him in november, did you get a fecal done on him? if you didn't, it couldn't hurt to get one now. if it comes back negative then you can just assume he is lazy for winter.

One other thing to take a look at is the new cage - you said the change in behavior occurred after the move? Give the cage a once over to make sure everything is right, especially temps. Check basking, ambient, and cool side temps with a quality digital thermometer (no strip or dial thermometers) to make sure the new cage is where you think it is. If everything there looks good and a fecal exam comes up clean, it's probably normal wintertime slowdown.
