Lighting/Heating Question

ShadowDruid Jan 22, 2006 02:04 PM

I bought a Heat Lamp for my beardie as well as 2 UVB lights with a holder for it. Now on the UVB light holder thingy it says max 25w. So I bought two UVB lights that were 25w's. Only now they're burning the plastic of the holder right by the light and it cracks the bulb when the plastic melts onto the light.

Is this cause my lights are too hot ? Or is it cause it's just a crappy light holder thing. I just bought one of those ones that holds the lights above a fishtank. Should I have bought a special UVB light holder??

LOL I hope this makes sense...

thanks.

Is the heat lamp close to the plastic fixture? The heat from the basking lamp can easily melt plastic if too close. It may be a better ideal to buy a metal light fixture for regular florescent tubs at home depot. Not sure how long the one you have now is, but y ou can find most sizes at home depot or similar hardware stores. Just make sure you get the kind that has a plug, alot of the larger fixtures are designed to be hard wired to a switch and are a pain to install (more like typical ceiling lights). For smaller tanks, you can use the under cabinet fixtures, they are still pretty cheap and you just remove the plastic cover over the bulb and the tube it comes with, replace with the U VB tube and leave the cover off. You can mount these onto a board and hang it over the top of your tank. I use this style for all my smaller tanks for UVB loving reptiles.
