Coniophanes imperialis

Lachesis1 Jan 22, 2006 02:31 PM

hello everyone, while this species isnt really a racer type snake as far as i know, i figured id post here anyway to see if some of you could point me in the right direction towards obtaining one. I know alot of you deal with alot of uncommonly kept south and central american colubrids(Oxyrhopus, rearfang, sighthunter etc...) so I figured this might be a place to start however im also going to post this in the rear fang section and hope for some results.

thanks for any info

The snake you mention Common Name (Black Striped Snake) is found from Brownsville Texas through to Honduras. It is most likely not protected I will check but could concievably be collected in the Brownsville area of Texas. Strictly reptiles is the importer to check with for Honduras but it is a small snake 12-18 inches and most likley eats insects so there is little or no demand for the pet trade.

thanks, ive read up on them a little bit and im prepared for a lizard/frog eater, im now just looking for a place to get them from.

ive been looking at other small to mid size colubrids (trimorphodon, leptodeira, Salvadora and a few others) if you could inform me about any other small, interesting colubrids that i am overlooking and could possibly obtain, that would be awesome.

thanks again

Shovel-nosed(Chionactis palarostris) snakes are small, colorful and do well as captives. I kept them in the 80's and they were fun. I kept mine in ground wallnut shells but silica course grain sand works well. Mine ate mealworms. You will have to collect them yourself. They are found on the road at night in the desert in Southern California. Borrego Desert or Victorville area are good places to find them. They come in black and white, red black and white, black and yellow, orange red and yellow, and every combination of the four colors.

yeah they look like theyd be interesting snakes but im on the other side of the country so collecting my own would pose a bit of a problem. Ive been looking into leptodeira but i believe theyre protected in texas? I may just keep my eyes peeled and hope something pops up.

Where in Texas do you live?

Im actually in Virginia (i guess ive been inquiring about a bunch of south texas snakes, sorry didnt mean to mislead you). basically, ill be heading to the university of florida by the end of august and i cant take my snakes with me, so im looking for a small, interesting colubrid i can possibly smuggle into the dorm with me (: the dorms allow animals to be housed in cages 3ftx2ftx2ft.(although technically, we're only allowed to keep small lizards, not snakes)

I found you a perfect snake. Florida swamp snake! It looks like a miniture Indigo! (Seminatrix pygaea) eats fish! Tell um how did that get in there?

i sure wouldnt mind getting a speckled racer from mark lucas, apparently hes got some in stock right now and sadly, i dont have the money or time to get one right now. for now ill keep my options open and see what pops up for sale.(or what pops up under rotting logs and pieces of tin)
