Handling Question

ShadowDruid Jan 22, 2006 04:02 PM

I was just wondering about handling corns... I have a yearling and when I got ot pick him up he/she slithers away and puts up a small fight but when I get him/her out it's okay and calm.

I am going from the side to pick it up but I dunno.. the corn is somewhat still small so I was just wondering if it settles down with age?

Thanks in advance!

It depends. I think if it always resists your attempts to pick it up and tries to get away, it's a normal, healthy snake. Alternatively, some get conditioned to handling and don't view you as a threat. Also, some species of snakes react differently. Finally, I've observed that if the snake is cool, it will put up less of a fight.

It sounds to me like you have a normal snake. My milk is so skittish, I have to sometimes lift him by the tail (not the very end) because he's constantly diving back into the mulch. He can really hug that stuff, too. Luckily, he's never spun around and snapped at me.

All 3 of ours are '05's, so I'll have to see when they grow up...

yours sounds normal. i have 4 corns and so far my motley butter has been the most flighty of them all. he is still a baby also. but my 2 3 year old bigger corns are real calm with handling. so just keep handling yours and it will get used to it more and will be lots better when its bigger.

My 3 yr old butter corn tries to get away as well but calms down once his picked up. My 2 05 babbies do the same but are getting calmer. I try to handle them at least every other day.
