Green tree 'type' , cage, and a few general questions

Blue_Lily Jan 22, 2006 05:15 PM

I'm buying a pair of green trees tomorrow. I've gotten so confused by what people are talking about with some types and have no clue what they might (and I know thats a big might) end up looking like. I know there isn't a true way to really determine with out seeing the parents (still doesn't turn out that way in some cases) but I still want to know what people see or feel is the look for a Manakwari, Wamena, Lereh, and Nabire types?

Also I am going to start to build some corner triangle type show cages. The dimensions I've come up with are 2 1/2 ft from the wall out and 5ft tall made out of wood with a glass front, 2ft tall base and a 1 1/2ft tall top to hide the lights. I was thinking about using maple planks joined together with a biscuit joint (so there isn't a frame showing). I was thinking about having the glass maker people cut a piece of glass and put hinges on it and a hole for a glass lock. I figured corner units would be best for space and I like the different look. Any input would be greatly appreciated (different dimensions, other ideas for the glass, etc).

Sorry two more questions. What age do you consider good for probing? I've never done it so I'm taking mine to the vet when ever it can be done. I've also moved recently and was wondering if any one knows of a good reptile vet in Wichita, KS.

Arus generally have lime green colored bodies with white scales that go down the dorsal region. They also have blunt tails.Maraukes also have this white stripe. The other ones you listed I'm not familiar with and it still won't be much help to determine them. Many of the types look similar when they mature with a few things that get them to stand out from another. As far as the cage, I think a corner unit would be awesome. Greg Maxwell mentions that it's better to have a wider cage than a taller one. Although these snakes are arboreal, they do go to ground and it's harder to maintain a good temperature gradient in a vertical cage. GTP's tend to go to the highest spot and that would also be the warmest in a vertical cage so they might have to sit where they aren't the most comfortable in order to get the height they want. If the cage is longer, you can maintain a ground temperature that is not too cool, and they can be at the height they like but are able to move farther from the heat source if they want. It will be really cool to see your cages when they are done. As far as a herp vet, you can check out www.anapsid.org/vets for a listing of vets near you. Where are you getting your chondros from?

I'll keep the heat thing in mind. I keep my snakes in rooms where the temp is regulated to almost nearly what it needs to be at, with a few humidifiers in the room.

The one I have now looks exactally like yours almost (she has a red spot on her nose that developed when she started her change and it hasn't gone away since its just turned darker) I posted some pics a bit back of her going through her color change. She originally was labeled to be of sorong type but she has turned out to be clearly jaya type (black tail). I got her from Ben Siegel (cause he was close and I got to pick her out of alot of babies). Here is a bit older image.

The two I was thinking about getting tomorrow are from KCRD (Kansas City Reptile Distrubutors). I have heard good things about them (if you can get a hold of them), and I do like the five day gurantee, them being in the same state exspecially if there is a problem. If for what ever reason they don't have them in tomorrow afternoon still I was planning on maybe searching at Frantz here in town. Won't get the experience of really going through them like I did last time but thats ok (it was a huge delight to see all the ones that I did and to go through individually though). I wanted to find some one close and decided that I don't need 'designer' since the only designers I seem to like are the 'mite phase' and the canary (but my husband doesn't like the canary), and I wanted a few more babies to watch the color change again.

I need to get Greggs new book, I have the older version thats green but its still packed away. How is the newer one?

Actually, Sorongs typically have a black tail. Mine does. I got both of my chondros from Troy Frantz, and they've been great! Excellent feeders, healthy and my female's temperament was exactly as promised. I can't complain. I think you'd also asked about probing. Chondros should not be probed until they are at least a year old, or some people say, over 100 grams. The spines are quite delicate on neonates and are kinked easily, so they shouldn't be messed with too much until they are older.

Thanks for catching that. I knew for some reason when it came out it would be backwards lol. The typing thing gets really dizzing some times, while I like the idea of having a certain type to know what it will end up looking like seems like new ones pop up every day. I should give up on that whole thing. Its like holidays... new ones are being made almost everyday by the greeting card companies. Not to say there aren't any genuine ones that have been around for a while but there sure are alot of new ones (hence that one calander that has a holiday for every day of the year). Sigh I give up! I'm just going with a burgandy and yellow hopefully they turn out pretty or intresting atleast. The only ones, when typing, I didn't particularly like were some of the biaks anyway.

Well, whatever you get, hope to see pictures! If you get one from Troy, tell him Meg said hello! You had asked about Greg's book. I'm still waiting to get the new one as it came back from the publisher late. I should be getting it within the month or so. I'll let you know how it is, but I'm sure it will be great! I love his other book.
