Hides in racks?

I know this has been answered before, but I never really paid attention because I don't have a rack system.
I plan on getting one, so I am getting all my questions in now.

Do you need hides in a rack?
Let's say I am using 41 qt. containers.

On the snake I think. Ive had imports that stopped eating when the hides came out. Ive had captive bred ones do the same thing. Ive also had some that dont care either way.

I use hides because I feel it makes the snake more comfortable.
