female layed 1 egg, normal?

fattiesNleos Jan 23, 2006 03:57 PM

hello, I have a rather large female leo. she is probably around 80 grams. She layed one egg yesterday after noon and I am supprised no others have poped out. Is this normal? she is not a first time breeder, but it would be her first of this batch. Some advice please...

It could be that it's her first clutch of the season. Usually they lay them one right after the other when they have two, so I doubt there is another in her, but check her belly to make sure. If you find there is one in there, I would keep and eye on her. She may absorb it or become eggbound, in which case you would need to take her to the vet.

Yeah, I havn't exactly masted the art of being totally able to tell if she has eggs in her or not, but I thought she did because she seemed heavier and had a little bit of a belly. Well if she does I hope she lays it soon. Also if the egg has some yellowing on it does that mean shes not getting enough calcium? I think I caught it pretty quick after she layed it because the paper towel was still damp, but the egg was a little chilly and kinda smooshy, but no indentaions yet. I suppose I'll find out. I have it in the incubator now with the others from my other females. They were first time breeders and have only layed two clutches but I think that they are done.

can you take a picture of her belly and post it?

Hmmmm....I don't think I can. I will have to look when I get home, I'm at work. whats going on with the yellowing thought? My fisrt time breeder layed her first clutch and they had some yellowing and the eggs indented and died. This egg has yellowing but hasnt indented yet, the others were with in 24 hours.

The shell is yellow? Or when candled you see yellow? If it's when candling then the egg is infertile. Post a picture of the egg too if you can.

The egg itself is yellow and parts are white. when i shine a flash light in it it's yellow also and then there is a spot that is kinda pinkish or darker near the top. My female is in shed now so i didnt think a picture at this time would help, but if she is finished tonight after school i will try to take a picture. one of my other first time breeders layed another egg and it was smooshy i dont think it was any good...but it is her third or fourth... her others are fine but the first didnt make it.

How old is the egg with the bullseye (pinkish spot)? Have you seen any veins in the egg other then the bullseye?

I'm not saying it's bad, so don't through it out, keep it, till it goes bad or hatches. Better to be safe then sorry. But the bullseye is a good sign.

yeah its a pinkish bullseye looking thing. i think the egg may be a little too moist, the vermiculite that its in. so i havnt taped any of the wholes off of the deli cup that its in, and the egg hasnt indented yet. the egg is still yellowish though. it seems like if the egg is bad it will indent within 24 hours. the third egg that one of my first time breeders layed didnt make it but her other first two are okay and have many veins. is it normal for the third to die. when it was layed it seemed way to smooshy and within an hour or so it started to indent and deflate.

A dented egg can still hatch, but you just never know for sure. I'd keep any eggs in the incubator till they look real bad, just to be on the safe side. I have noticed that if they dent and turn a very yellow color with in the first couple of days then they are infertile. I think the one with no veins yet but a bullseye may be fertile, but all you can do for sure is wait a couple of weeks and candle again to see if the veins show up.
