Algea on shell

dmbfan Jul 25, 2003 03:20 PM

My turt is constantly getting algea on her shell, is this harmful? Also, the shell is rather dark. I have had her for about 4 years, and I'm not sure how her shell is supposed to look. Is it supposed to be completely smooth? Also, I know they shed scutes, but one of the scutes around the bottom is rather soft and when you press on it, you can see water bubbles in it. Is this normal? Any info would be helpful.

Algae on the shell is normal. Try putting some feeder fish into the aquarium - fish love to feed on algae and will eat it off the turtles shell - this is how its done in the wild anyway. Plus, the fish will be a source of food for your turtle.

As for the coloring of your turtles shell, its very common for captive turtles to be brown. As long as you have the proper lighting (UVB a basking light) then your little turt should be alright.

Im not sure about the bubbles that you are talking about but if your turtle has changed or you think he might be sick, you might want to talk to your vet.

Good luck!
