Can too much calcium be bad for a Beardie?

drunkmike Jan 23, 2006 06:34 PM

I have had my beardies on a schedule that is as follows as far as calcium and herptivite go..

Adult beardie gets fed 1 time a day with veggies and then when he looses interest in those, I offer bugs if he is still hungry. I very very lightly dust both bugs and greens with rep-cal phosphorus-free calcium with vit-d3 every day, and then once a week with herptivite calcium. Adult is ~ 2 years old.

Juvi/Sub-Adult beardie gets fed 2 times a day once with veggies, and the next with veggies and bugs if still hungry. Same as the adult I use the calcium very lightly on both bugs and greens but ONLY ONE feeding a day and the herptivite once a week calcuim also.

Is this ok to do? I have had mixed opinions on this in the past and want to get a general idea on what everyone else does. I know vitamin a is bad for beardies, but as far as I can tell between these 2 rep-cal brands that I use, neither have vit a so I guess its ok. Is too much calcium bad for a beardie? Give me some input and thanks!

My juvi/sub-adult has a CRAZY appetite and will eat anything you put in front of her (only dust her's one time a day) and my fully grown adult only eats every other day or so and is still happy and very active so I'm only assuming that everything is ok. Thanks for aything you guys can offer!

I don't know, but I am wondering the same thing. Mine get repcal on the weekdays and a multivitamin on the weekends. i've read places that when their adults they should get their crix dusted less, one site said once a MONTH thats crazy , that can't be right!

Too much calcium can be bad for a dragon. For adult dragons, they only need to have calcium with d3 and multivitamin dusted insects (or lightly dusted greens) twice a week. For dragons younger than a year, below is a good guide.

Hatchling to 4 months old: Dust every insect feeding (2-3 times a day)

4months to 8 months: One dusting every day

8 months to 12-14 months: Once every other day

14 months : Dust twice a week.

This is du sting with both calcium and multivitamins together. Dustings should be a very light 'frosting' of insects, not a coating like shake and bake.
