Montpellier Snake

metalpest Jan 23, 2006 09:31 PM

Does anyone know where I can find some Malpolon monspessulanus (montpellier snakes)? Has anyone here ever kept this species?

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper stored up acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched tv. And then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus stole all his acorns, and he got a race car. Is any of this sinking in?

I have kept one but I don't know where you can get some. Nice snake. Does well in the same conditions as a Red rat. Mine showed no tendancy to bite and tamed quickly, however, being a racer type this may not allways be the case.

Where did you get yours from Frank? I know world wide fauna has them listed on their site, but you have to be a wholesale importer to order from them. After I saw one of these on TV, I really wanted it. Cool looking snake.

I got it at a reptile show where it was mis-labeled as a diadem ratsnake.

I have rearely seen them offered but Glades Herps has had them on occasion.

Nice snakes and seem easy and simple to keep as long as they feed on rodents. Offer tham a lot of room and stay clear of the sharp end.

What species was that? I don't think that was the specific one I was talking about, I've never seen the one from your post before. Cool looking snake.

Well, it's a juvenile Malpolon monspessulanus from Coto Doñana, Andalucia.

I've never seen that pattern on a monspessulanus, does that fade as they age? Was that one cb and where did you get it from?

Yes, the colour turns more uniform with age. The individual in the photos was photographed in situ in Coto Doñana, Andalucia.

Very interesting picture. Quite different from mine (which I believe came from Egypt).
