uth heat transfer

sumguy Jul 25, 2003 03:29 PM

Bought a kit with an Exo Terra heat Wave UTH. My first tank has a UTH stuck to it, and I don't want to do that again. I've read the forums about attaching a piece of stone or ceramic tile to the adhesive then propping the heated tile against the tank bottom leaving an air gap underneath for heat dissipation. The only tile I can find is 1/4 in thick. How well would this transfer heat through the tile, then glass bottom, then 1-2 in of repti-bark or aspen? I would hate to attach the tile then find out my heat transfer is too low. Would applying fine sand or some other powdery rock to the adhesive work as well or is it preferable to have it stuck to large flat smooth surface? Would it be OK to just leave the paper on the adhesive and prop it up? It will be attached to a 20gal long btw.

Attach it to another seperate piece of glass and just place
that under where you want the heat. Makes it so much easier
when you want to take the tank outside to spray it off, not
having to worry about the cord. Plus you can move the heater
as you wish.

I stick my UTHs to ceramic tiles (smooth surface), and leave that side UP, facing the glass. I leave about 1/4" air space between the tile/uth and the bottom of the tank. --Frank

Attached it to thin plate of glass. The tile seemed pretty thick plus an inch or two of substrate and I was worrried it wouldn't pass enough heat. The glass seems to be working OK, don't know why I didn't think of that.
Thanks for the replies.
