cloudy eyes

J a i m e Jul 25, 2003 03:58 PM

Hi,

I've noticed that my turtle's both eyes are slightly cloudy. I recently came back from a trip which was for a few weeks and could not arrange for anyone to clean the tank while I was gone. I did however clean it both before I left and after I arrived back. Is it possible that the cloudy eyes are due to the dirty water? Will the cloudiness go away overtime now that I can clean her tank regularly?

Do you mean a film over them? Do you use any additives in your water?

It's similar to when fish sometimes get quite a bit of cloudiness over their eyes and they appear to be a translucent white, except with my turtle, it's not nearly as bad.
I do add a water conditioner which helps remove any chlorine in the water.

Aquatic turtles are very suseptible to eye infections. Many different factors could be the reason. Vitamin deficiency, dirty water, disease, etc. Shop around at your local pet stores and find something called TURTLE EYE. It was recommended by my vet to keep on hand just in case something like this crops up. You drop a drop of it onto each eye daily. It conditions and helps resolve any infections as well as making those pretty eyes bright again. Be sure to use a good filter and change the water in the aquarium weekly to keep your turtle from getting it again.

Good luck!
