Can someone please tell me at what age the Black rat tends to lose their patterning and become Black?

Thanks

Black rat snakes are different geographicaly. The one you posted a picture of looks like it will stay as is. Here in kansas they turn all black at about one year of age. They always have pattern on the skin between the scales but some are darker than others. I found a red morph two years ago you are going to hate me but I....................I...............let...........let it..............let it go.

I thought I would clarify my statement about letting it go. They are creatures of habit and I put it back under the board under which it was found. Finding it again would be relatively simple as it will be under one of the boards in the spring.

I dont know that I would have put it back..haha..but how nice of you to do so. Mine was found in the middle of a trail during a VERY bad storm, so I consider it a rescue

Where I live black rat snakes are very common, the most common snake we have. I do not breed anything local only tropical rat snakes. I also released a confirmed state record length Black Rat Snake. The black rats here are indigo black.

Thanks for your answer. This one was wild caught in Johnson county, Kansas. Its the only wild caught snake in my collection which is mostly kings and Milks.

This guy is one of my absolute favorites though. Took several months to teach him some manners..but now he is as sweet as can be He was wild caught Last summer. I dont know his age, so that is why I was wondering about the maturity and his coloring.
