red eye tree frog problem!!!!!

dallasL10 Jan 24, 2006 07:08 PM

ok, i got baby red eyes a few weeeks ago and one of them looks to be real healthy. it is eating and active. however, the other one was real skinny when he arrived and does not look like he as grown since then compared to the other one. he sleeps often and my big concern is that he somtimes sleeps on the ground. when he sleeps on the ground his color is kinda brown and his eyes do not look. my temperature is between 70 and 80, usually 75 and the humidity is steady at 65-80, usually 70. i feed them crickets, but im wondering if they are too big for the little one to eat. what could be the problem???

Hello, your temp. and humidity seem to be ok, what kind of tank are they in? Whats in the tank? I would suggest feeding them pin head crickets or fruit flies and also are you gut loading the crickets before feeding? Do you dust the crickets with a vitamin before feeding? If not, I would suggest that you do that and maybe seperate them, because the smaller one might not be getting enough to eat. Hope this helps

Alot of hygrometers aren't very accurate above 70%, so don't rely it on completely. I have found that my RETF do best around 68-70 degrees at night.. and 75 ish during the day. I have also found that they love it if the humidity stays 75-80%.. if you glass has moisture on it.. they are happy! They tend to be much more active..

Do you have a waterdish in your tank? and do you mist often?
How old are your frogs? and what size crickets are you feeding them? How many do you put in the tank each night?

There could be lots of things going on.. more than likely it is a simple husbandry issue that should be easy to fix.. answer these questions.. and I will more than likely have a few more..

yes i have a water dish in there, and i feed them prolly 1/4 inch or smaller if i can get them, i got them a prolly about 3 weeks ago and they were babies, and depending if how many crickets are in there i try to keep it anywhere from 4-6

Cool..
I realize you have not had them very long, but do you know when they came out of the water? I have seen people sell babies all the from 2 weeks to 3 months old (and there is a considerable size difference there). So.. I am going to take the worst case and assume they are about 6 weeks old. IF this is the case, 1/4" may be to big.

Would I would do, get a crittercage of something similar, put a damp paper towel in there. Put the smaller frog, that you are worried about eating in the crittercage with a couple of the smallest crickets you have. Put the crittercage in a dark (preferably warm and damp) spot, and leave him be for a couple of hours. You should not do this until a couple of hours after you normally turn the lights out. Then.. count the crickets.. see if ate some.. if it did not.. it could be health issues.. or it could be that it just doesn't want to take food that is that big. Sometimes they get picky.. I feed my baby retf hydei fruit flies alot (they are the bigger of the fruit fly family) and pinhead or 1/8inch crickets.. See what you can find.. hopefully it is eating what you have and is just smaller than the other one..

If the skinny one eats in the critter cage.. put him in there only a couple of times a week.. let him try to fend for himself the rest of the time..
