A question on locking!

vetboy3 Jan 24, 2006 10:28 PM

Is there any way to lock a 125 gallon tank? I don't mean to keep the animal from getting out as much as I mean to keep people from getting in.
I work at a pet store and I almost have my boss talked into ordering a Burmese Python. He's interested in getting a nice tank and setting up a very attractive enclosure that will look nice from all four sides of the tank. His only concern is being able to lock it and have it still look nice and not jimmy-rigged.
Please let me know if you have any ideas on how to lock it, or if you know of a tank/enclosure that is lockable and professional looking.
Thanks for the help!

I don't know how you were planning on building the cover or what you were to use.

However if you build a hood similar to a finished wood hood for a fish tank, except all the way around. You could build an attractive element that would be able to house lights timers RHP etc. All while being able to install a lock in a door on top to provde axcess.

I assume you need the lock to prevent someone from getting the snake out while the store is open for buisness. The simple fact is the hood would weigh enough to keep it on the tank but but to heavy to easily move on a whim.

Good Luck

depending how secure you wanted it in addition to the above you could attach a lip around the bottom portion of the hood. this would have to be done after the hood was constructed and put onto the tank. the wood lip would not allow the hood to be remoeved without removing the lip due to the plastic lip on the tank.

i dont like the idea of helping a pet store to get a burm since most pet store burms dont end up too good but at least there was some good motivation behind the question.

A standard 125 gallon tank is 72x18x22. That's really not going to a suitable enclosure for a Burmese python for very long. Have y'all figured out what you're going to do with the snake when it's 3 yrs old, 10 ft long, and weighs 40 lbs? Or a few years later when it's 15 ft. and weighs 120 lbs?

Good info on these guys at http://www.anapsid.org/burm.html Your boss needs to understand the commitment he'll be making if he gets a Burmese.
