Back to the eating thing... yet again...

MdngtRain Jan 25, 2006 11:38 AM

I feed my guy baby food mixed with CGD every night, which has been recently supplamented with crix. The 2 times I gave him the crix, he did not eat them. He doesn't really eat the CGD/babyfood (either alone of mixed together) either. I've gotten him to lick a few times off of a spoon, but he gets bored or full or nervous, and runs THROUGH the food instead of eating it. Last night, he seems to have jumped full-on into his food dish b/c there are smears of CGD/babyfood all over the cage. Would this still be the "acclimating to a new environment" phase? It has only been two weeks since I got him... Maybe I'm just paranoid...
(Any ways to entice him to eat, rather than bathe in his food?)
Thanks!

"Maybe I'm just paranoid... "
^exactly ^
first, i would quit with the babyfood all together.
second, i would mix the food as it suggests to be mixed on the label 2:1 water to diet.
third, i would leave your gecko alone except for watering and feeding for the next couple of weeks, and maybe a 5 minute session for handling each day.
fourth, the only thing i would do is monitor his appearance ( being filled out) and weather or not it is pooping regularly.

if it does not look emaciated, and is pooping, i would leave it alone until you can tell your gecko is eating it's food.
if you offer food every night is is more than likely going to turn it down 2-3 nights a week because it most likely ate as much as it could the day before.

just remember, some people keep thousands of cresteds, and have 1% of them die while in their care while being kept on this diet, and this diet alone, so chances are your gecko is perfectly fine and just needs to be broken into it's environment.
this is the way i, and many others keep cresteds, but it is not the only way so don't take offense to what i've said.
good luck

( just realized i spelled whether incorrectly ( weather))

if you only give your gecko as much food as you think it will eat, then you will be able to tell if it is eating. problem is most people mix WAY too much diet and can't tell if any of it is gone.
to give you an idea, i feed my hatchlings on 2"X2" squares of was paper, with 4-8 drops of CGD per gecko. that's right, DROPS.
i give a maximum of 1.5 teaspoons per adult, and rarely have it all eaten. if it eats it all, give it a little more. if you have some leftover, give it less

TY for the advice. I will try that (less food & CGD w/o baby food).
He seems ok in terms of weight, but I will have invest in a scale to be sure.
I'll try to stop being that paranoid keeper that drives everyone nuts now

it looks very healthy in the photo, you probably have nothing to worry about. as far as crickets, you can try feeding it a few appropriately sized ones 1-2 days after it's last feeding of CGD if you'd like. i've never had any turn them down unless if they are already full from another meal.

Hello, I feed my cresteds out of a baby food lid. I put like half a teaspoon of the diet and a few drops of water in the lid. The mixture barely covers the bottom of the small lid. I can tell when they have lapped it up cause it is not very much in the lid. Sometimes as a treat i mix a drop of honey into the mixture and they LOVE IT. This is just what i do you could try it. I would not handle him for a while, it might take him a little time to find the new food bowl. but he will.
Cheers
