Bad shed question

phiber_optikx Jan 25, 2006 02:52 PM

Onyx had a very weird shed. He had a bad shed. It was a complete shed and was not really a "BAD" shed. He shed in 1 piece but a few random scales retained the old skin. This seems odd because it is literally just several (3-5) individual scales in different areas of his body. What could this indicate? I kept up the humidity and everything. Could he possibly have scaring on some scales? He is too small and too dark to actually get a good look. Thanks again for everyones help.

I would suggest you Wet a paper towel and run him through it while holding it in your hand so you can give it some slight pressure as it runs down his body if you want to get rid of the old skin in those areas. Works like a charm for me.

I already got rid of the scales. My question was more focused on why it happened...... thanks for the input though.

If he's trying repeatedly to find a way out of his cage (and most healthy kingsnakes constantly test their environment), he could have sustained some very minor injuries. Adobe, my milk snake, aka: "The escape artist of the century," had 2 bad sheds after she returned home. By returning I mean I found her lurking in the bathroom looking for a meal a month after her daring escape. Is you snake curling around the top of the cage & stuff at night? Also, I'm not positive, but I know stress causes a variety of shedding issues. If he's a recent aquisition, it could be that.
