how many hets can one snake have.....?

wisema2297 Jan 25, 2006 08:00 PM

how many het forms are out there? Het's for color, hets for pattern? I would like to come up with a quadruple het. Just keep breeding different het forms together and then breed those to other het forms. Makes my head hurt. Wouldn't it be fun to have 5 or 6 different color and pattern morphs from one breeding?

You could theoretically have as many hets as are recessive traits. As far as I know there are no genetic patterned snakes. I am of course refering to saddles not coloration. You would have better luck getting hets by breeding two seperate morphs together rather than het snakes. So if you bred a butter and a ghost together you would get 100.00% het. Amel, het. Anery A, het. Caramel, het. Hypo. And if you bred the offspring together you would get 0.39% normal
0.78% het. Amel

So as you can see, the reason you don't see a lot of hets listed is because there are too many, and you can't tell an amel het caramel apart from an amel het anery so you couldn't sell it saying that it is or isn't het for a singular trait.

Striping in cornsnakes is simple recessive. So is Motley.

Other species have White-sided, etc...

A simple project if you want 4 different morphs from cornsnakes is to breed 2 double hets (amel & anery). So from these normal looking corns you can produce: normals, amels, anerys, and snows.

If a snow was bred to a caramel motley, then the babies would be heterozygous for four mutant genes.

Lets see, how many combinations could appear in the F2s?

normal
amelanistic
anerythristic
caramel
motley
amelanistic anerythristic (snow)
amelanistic caramel (butter)
amelanistic motley
anerythristic caramel (probably looks anerythristic)
anerythristic motley
caramel motley
amelanistic anerythristic caramel (probably snow)
amelanistic caramel motley (butter motley)
anerythristic caramel motley (probably like anerythristic motley)
amelanistic anerythristic caramel motley (probably snow motley)

I always feel like "duh" when you guys talk about genetics. I am studying it to some degree in my vet tech classes, but nothing in depth. I wish there was a book that listed all the genes in corn snakes that are dominant, recessive, codominant.....on and on. I have the book on corn genetics, but it does not have a set list, that I had seen.

If you have Chuck Pritzel's book, then just make a list of the individual mutant genes. Mark them all recessive except the one called diffuse or diffused, which is the pattern gene in blood red corns. The evidence isn't in for that one.

if you want lots of hets in one snake breed a striped snow to a ghost. you will have hets for amel, anery, aneyB, stripe, and charchoal

You wouldn't have hets for anery B as far as I can tell.....
