66% het question

biscuit71 Jan 25, 2006 09:47 PM

I am looking into purchasing a 66% het Albino female. She is listed as being 1 of 4, one of the clutch was an albino. I was wondering if this is even a good possiblility or if i am jsut better of going for a 100% het male and female. As i said in a previous post, I am not all about an immediate result, as the experience is more of a concern to me... Ideas?

thank you...

Sean

if the purchase is comming from someone that can give references as to their quality of animals and character of himself then i would buy if that was all that my budget could handle. Personally with the price difference being small I would just go with the sure thing though.

I would say pay no more than half what a 100% het is worth for a 66% het. With a 100% het you know its a het. With a 66% het you dont know its a het, but you could buy 2 of them for the price of a 100% het, so atleast the odds are in your favor. There is always the chance both 66% hets are normal though... thats when 2 or 3 years down the road you will kick your self for not buying the 100% het. You should also realize most breeders dont sell 66% het female, because they are worth more to just raise up and prove out, so if you find some, use caution. I was at a reptile show last weekend where I saw a guy sell about 30 50% het female pieds for $100 each. While it seems like a good deal and he had several pieds, spiders, and albinos sitting right next to them... a pied could pay for its self real quick if you used it to set next to a bunch of normals at shows and sell them as poss hets. I looked over about 10 of the babies and didnt find one with markers on it... makes me wounder. Breeders/sellers dont have to answer when a poss het doesnt prove out. I know one breeder does offer something like if you buy 5 het females and none prove out in 2 breedings, they will buy them all back. Seems risky on the breeders part.

All very good points and hets are a great way to go. Personally, I would go for 100% if the budget will allow. You may have to wait a little longer but the odds are in your favor for the long term. And absolutely ensure you buy from a trusted or reliable source.

If one of the offspring in that clutch was Albino that snake IS 100% het albino.

If you have the 100% het male - then I see no harm in picking up the 66% PH also - I wouldn't just pick up the 66%PH tho. It would also depend on how much they are asking and what kind of paperwork/guarantees are included. But it never hurts to have some possibles in you collection to dink with.

And ensure your 100% is 100%. There is nothing worse than trying to prove out a 66% with a dud

Yah, I have a 66% het female thats going to breed next year to a male 100% het, and I trust the source on the 66% het, but the 100% het is totally a shot in the dark. I am not going to rule her out until I breed her to an albino in '08. I have already put a ton of time into this exact situation... if it all works out great, if not, I have lost a considderable amount of time and money, but atleast I have a good breeder female (I hope). Just to give you a good idea as to what I think a 66% het is worth, I paid $250 for a 66% het albino that was 600g, while a 100% het would have been $600-$800. I dont think I would have paid any more.
