male has turned extremely agressive (Help)

kathyc Jan 25, 2006 10:51 PM

my female has laid 21 eggs. the both of them have been together since they were small. just before she laid the eggs the male started getting really mean towards the female. Now since she has laid them he has become down right violently agressive to the point he bit a small chunk from back of head.
Now i have them seperated and am in awe considering all the money i have tied up in 65 gal tank lighting ect ect ect. but i guess what i need to know..... if i can put a piece of plexi glass between them colored so they cant see each other... would they be ok in same tank if i did that?
pet store is bringing female back to health and helping me getting her to eat again since male stopped her from eating. is this normal for them?

any help would be appreciated .. thank you

That's what happens when you house dragons together. No, your tank isn't large enough to do that with, you'll need 2 separate enclosures. If you think running 2 enclosures is expensive what are you going to do when the eggs hatch???? housing and caring for the parents is nothing compared to breeding.

i do understand what you are saying.. fortunately i have a good pet store around here and they have taken the eggs and incubated them. I am not ready for that responsibility... the pair was a rescue and i have been very busy researching and making the right freinds in order to take care of them properly. And i have decided to sell the male due to the agression on the female and doctoring the female to the best ability i can. Like i said in the beginning they are new to me but i feel i am reaching out to the right people online and off line to help me with the situation. so i thank you for your input. I did not realize they got violent to that extinct. BUT NOW I DO.

thanks again for the info.

The only way to ensure both dragons remain healthy and not fight is to house them separately in cages that are at least 4'x2'x2' in size. I do not think a 65 gal is large enough to divide so both dragons have minimum room required.

I noticed you indicated you had housed both dragons together since little. How long have you had them? It is very dangerous to breed females who are under 15 months old, it puts alot of stress on their growing bodies. Deffinitely being harrassed and attacked by the male after the ordeal of laying eggs could easily wear her down to the point she may not fully recovered. Hopefully the person at the petstore really knows her stuff so she can nurse your female back to health again. Deffinitely arrange for a vet check, to ensure the bite didn't get infected and the stress of egg laying and being with teh male didn't cause her to become loaded with parasites or loose too much bone calcium from her system.

thank you for responding. I have set up an appointment with the vet and have reluctantly decided to sell the male beardie with the help of the pet store. female is now eating and we have been usint neosporin on the wound (according to the pet store not that bad of a wound) to me it was enough to freak me out.

i appreciate the advice and look forward to shareing more good news when she gets a good bill of health.
