Aluminum foil tape and Flexwatt (how to tape properly) question.

Turtlequest Jan 25, 2006 10:58 PM

If I am taping flexwatt to a piece of plastic with aluminum foil tape do i tape the edges (clear plastic part) of both sides of the flexwatt, or do I cover the entire piece of flexwatt? Also, what do I do with the end of the flexwatt (the cut part). Do I cover the whole way across or just the ends (where the connectors are on the wired side).

I am taping it to the back of sterilite boxes (thats ok right).

Thanks for the help.

Before you tape the flex watt to your enclosure, make sure you put non metal electrical tape on all exposed wires or end of flex watt. I solder my wires, so I had to cover all of it with black electrical tape, so nothing would short out and cause a fire. After that, you can just tape the flex watt around the edges. Derek

I would not tape the flexwatt to the back or bottom of a rubbermaid or sterilite box. It just gets in the way when you clean the box. I would tape the flexwatt to a board and place the boxes on the board. Just like a shelf in a rack. I have made custom size heat pads from pieces of flexwatt and taped it to 1/4 inch thick pieces of pegboard, press board, etc.

As far as your connections and taping the hot ends, I use electrical tape. I tape over the two main connections, the wide silver traces that run down each side. I also tape over the cut ends where the cut edges of the smaller traces are exposed.
