Sorry for my absence......holbrooki...anyone?

mattbrock Jan 26, 2006 10:11 PM

Sorry JETZEN, I have to pick on someone since I haven't been here in so long. I don't have them eating pinks in my hand though..lol.

Thought I would share a few pics of some of the little maturing Acadia, LA kings. This is the clutch that produced several very red offspring. Sadly the best of the group never ate with consistency and died. I still have several, including male #1.

Here is male #2, which technically belongs to Will Kouns, but I still have it.

And my little female. She's the biggest piglet I have ever seen.

Hey what's up Todd! Yeah, let's see some pics! Is that (Speckled) the same one you had when I was over at your house last year?
Thanks,

Zee

Yeah, my favorite pic but she passed away. I have a pair from her exact neck of the woods and recently got another from the next county.

Those are very nice Matt! Got any pics of the parents? They really are some beauties.
Here's a pic of one of my wild caughts, a 3 foot female that I personally collected last year in S. Cameron parish, LA. (before Hurricane Katrina).

Actually the female that laid this clutch was gravid and we had absolutely no idea when we captured her. She was fresh out of brumation in early April and thin. She was smaller than I would think a female could even be to lay a viable clutch, but she laid 11 eggs a few weeks later. All of them hatched, and we lost one. I can get pics of the female from Dr. Hunter. She is nice, a very uniform pattern with no bands, and very yellow. We plan to breed her again this year as she has doubled in size, and the adult male we collected is PHENOMENAL!! Anyway, they were all collected in Crowly on I-10. And no, you don't have my permission to hunt there...lol.

Hahahaha! I know exactly where that is (used to live about an hour away from there)! But don't worry, since I am now living a mere 1200 miles away! And with today's gas prices I don't think I'll be going there anytime soon! I'd rather pay you to send me a nice specimen from there - Believe me, that's a lot cheaper for me!

Hey, I have a WC from the coast near houston, and I got it to eat pinks, but it wont eat anything even slightly larger. Maybe its the hair that turns it away. Also, it won't take more than a pink at a time, and only live.
I always heard that kingsnakes were hearty feeders.
Any suggestions?

Generally speaking kings are very hearty and will eat anything. There are exceptions, especially with WC's I've noticed.

Sometimes what I do when they will not convert to the next size prey item is give them a couple weeks without food. I don't mean a month, but say 10-14 days or so. When they start frantically searching and roaming the cage for food then it is time to offer them the larger prey. The normally have a strong response to feeding stimuli when they have fasted for a while. I too have had this problem. I have an adult speckled kingsnake that will ONLY eat fuzzy rat pups, and nothing else. No rat pinks, no weanling rats. They have to be fuzzy rat pups. Why he's that way...I don't know? But they do have feeding preferances. Also, young ones will often imprint their first prey and demand that be what you feed them regardless. When that happens, and they don't convert to larger prey with my above method I'll usually catch a skink and rub fecal matter on the head of the prey. If that thing refuses the scent of a ground skink it's hopeless. Try that and see what happens.

thats a good suggestion.
Hate to scent, but,...
I've tried the 2 week deprivation already.

You should have 5 lined skinks around there that they would shred! Or anoles (to scent with)
