what size prey items

SimplyRed Jan 26, 2006 11:09 PM

what "flavor" would match a 5" around snake, and which for a 3.5" around snake? and could i buy the same size prey item for both? would a 5" around item be too big for the smaller snake? thanks

for ball pythons, you want to feed prey items the same size around (ie girth) as the snake's thickest part or slightly smaller. You will need two different sized prey items for your two snakes. You could feed the larger snake two of the smaller prey items, if buying two different sized rats is inconvenient for you.

For the 5" girthed snake, a medium rat should be about right, and a newly weaned/small rat should be good for the smaller snake...never actually measurd the rat's bellies to get an ideal what their girth size is, so can't say 100% for sure. I usually just eye ball it, but then again, I breed my own rats, so alot easier to see if the rat is big/small enough for any particular snake I am feeding.

can you go measure some of your rats please? lol im not gonna have any way to bring the snakes to a rat or vice versa, so i need to know what size i need before i order them.

could i get something thats 4" around and feed it to both, do you think? yes buying 3 different sizes for my 3 different snakes will cost too much. hoping to figure out a happy medium for my two, the 5" and the 3.5". i think a 4" around would work, but id like to get other opinions too

they are all on mice right now, is there ever any problem switching species? will my snakes possibly not eat because it smells different?

thanks for the help
