HELP

Last week I bought two whites tree frogs from a local reptile show here in Pittsburgh and the other day I took both of them out for cage cleaning and the one just started to move really slow and then just stop and I could see it was not breathing but i turn him on his back and he flipped himself over but he still wasen't breathing...... So if anyone can please give me some pointers or tell me how you take care of you're white's tree frogs, so i can save the other one from dying.. it would be much appreciated......

....YOUR HELP IS NEEDED....

Thank you

Bradman.. with the little bit of info you have provided.. it is really impossible to say what happened. Given that you have only had the animal for week, pre-existing conditions are very likely (especially if it is a WC animal). Without knowing what you have to provide care for them, that could be a possibility as well. It could also just have been time for that particular frog to go.. do you have any idea on the age?

As for care.. they need lots of room.. about 60% humidity and 75 degrees.. a place to soak and lots to climb on. They are good size frogs, and thus produce a lot of waste.. so you have to make sure to provide a clean tank for them..

It sounds like you are new to treefrogs.. or atleast whites.. 2 bits of advice.. #1 don't replace your lost animal for atleast 2 months.. this will give you plenty of time to ensure the living animal is in good health, and #2 if you do replace it, do so with a captive bred animal (make sure to keep them seperate for a couple of weeks after you get it to ensure health on the new one.

I have lost several WC in the past, most are usually within the first week.. truth is, most of the time, there is nothing you can do.. it is just going to happen.

WELL the one that died was about 2in from entrance to exit and the other one is a little smaller. I have them in a 50 gallon tank, some fake moss and some other fake plants, i have this stuff I forget what it is called but it comes in a dry brick then you soak it in water, and it turns out sort of like dirt..... there water dish is about 6" by 6"... I have a ceramic heat bulb that keeps the cage around 78 to 85 degrees.... I mist down the tank at least 2 to 3 times a day.... Once i got them the bigger one hat died stayed on the ground he did not climb at all and I didn't see any eating getting done... soo if this is a little more info for you to give me some guidance that would be great........

Thanks

I'm thinking your guy was just sick after reading your last post. Your doing everything right, it was just a stroke of bad luck for you. Keep a watch on your other guy for a while to make sure he's not got the same problem. If at all possible, you might be better placing him in a quarantine tank with just papertowel for substrate (so you can monitor his feces).

I agree w/ Dahkota.. (she is the frog queen by the way)..
But odds are, you just had a little bad luck and picked one up that was either sick, or just did not handle the stress of shipping.. If it was a wild capture, there is a good chance that it was recently imported, and then sold 2 or 3 times before making it to the show and then to your house. It can be hard on some animals.

Having said that.. I would certainly consider putting your remaining animal in a smaller tank w/ paper towel on the bottom for a few weeks. It is very important to keep a fresh clean towel in the tank.. and keep things damp.

I would certainly not get another animal for a month or two.. just watch the one you have. After you are sure the animal you have is healthy, then you can consider picking up a cage mate for it.. I would look for a captive bred animal this time (it will be a bit more expensive.. but much higher chance of getting a healthy animal). I would also look for one that is an adult. Whites are pigs.. and if you put a froglet in there.. it may become dinner..

You also mention that you got two of them? Chances are if the guy was ill, your second one could be as well. Make sure you do a thorough cleaning of your tank and if you get another one you will need to quaratine it (3 months for wild caught and 1 month for captive bred).

Tim gave you pretty much the rundown. You need a minimum 20 gallon tank for one white's tree frogs. Add ten to that number for every additional frog. I house four in a 72 gallon. If possible, a taller tank is better than a wide as they are aboreal and like to be up high. They like lots of hiding places to sleep during the day . .I can't even see mine during the day! Then at night, they like to roam around and play.

Feeding is basically 4 - 6 crickets every other day (give or take . .you'll figure it out as you adjust to your frogs habits). This is for adults. Also, dust the crickets every third feeding (again, this is for adults). They need clean water every day and don't put the water too deep 'cause they can drown quite easily.

Wow . .I just rambled off alot of information at once. If you have any questions, let me know.

Check out my photo's on this site (it'll be under Dakhota). You'll see some pic's of my tank which could help you along if you need it.

Good Luck!
