Best starter frog?

mom2autumnnreign Jan 27, 2006 03:14 AM

So, I've been thinking about building a natural type viv...and want to get a frog or two for it...and I was wondering since I've never kept frogs before what would be the best starter species?....I've been considering an American green tree frog or a whites tree frog..Are these good species to start out w/? I've been researching both but wanted to get the opinions of people that keep them...thanks so much

id go with the whites treefrogs. they are easy to care for. hardy. do well in high or low humidity. buy captive bred from somewhere.

I highly recommend Gray Treefrogs. Green TFs are WAY TOO jumpy and difficult to control, especially for a beginner. Grays are easy to move and don't freak out when picked up. Whites are definitely a good choice.

... nature has ceased to be what it always had been - what people needed protection from. Now nature - tamed, endangered, mortal - needs to be protected from people. When we are afraid, we shoot. But when we are nostalgic, we take pictures.

I agree. Gray tree frogs (Hyla versicolor)are not shy and timid like the American Greens, very easy to care for,and are quite hardy. I absolutely love the male calls, although they can get quite loud!*grin* The best thing about GTFs is they're diurnal.

The White's Tree Frog (Litoria caerulea), also known as the Dumpy tree frog,is also another very good option for beginners.
White's are large, very docile, and tolerate handling better than most frogs. They're a nocturnal species so they spend most their day hiding in a nice dark, quite spot in their enclosure.

Both make wonderful pets and are good starter frogs.
