Dwarf Ball python

reptiporium Jan 27, 2006 08:46 AM

We have several ball pythons, and it has come to our attention one is a dwarf. I have found no information (rarity, prices, longevity...) on a dwarf ball python.... any help would be appreciated. email jlwilliams@reptiporium.com

Like I said in the subject line, unless you have reproduced your "Dwarf" more than once, and kept at the very least monthly weights/lengths you are going to have one hell of a time selling any animals.

As far as I know, all known dwarf varieties of boids are not the result of a mutation in captivity, but are wild caught animals collected from island populations where natural selection has given an upper hand to smaller snakes, versus larger(most likely this is because island snakes prey on birds much more so than mainland snakes, meaning that slimmer body build and size is a positive factor allowing the animal to support its' weight in the forest canopy better).

Hope this helps,
Dan

Sometimes ball pythons produce one or more really small eggs in a clutch of normal-sized ones. As far as I’ve ever heard, the resulting (relatively) tiny hatchlings grow up to be normal in size. The link below talks about one such clutch.

Going strictly from memory, I think Rich Crowley produced one ball python that was 25 grams or less at hatching.
