Question about High Gold Ball Python.

Shigeru Jan 27, 2006 01:13 PM

I just got my first snake ever(I'm used to keeping lizards and dragons), and I noticed it sometimes yawns or opens its mouth really wide. It's about a month old and I'm jus wondering if that's a problem or its something I should not worry about...

Thank you!!!

Providing it's not leaving the mouth open for quite some time or doing it very often, it shouldn't be anything to worry about. Occaisonal yawns, especially after feeding is normal, mostly the snake realigning the bones in it's mouth after eating or just yawning.

However, if it is doing it alot, or you do notice alot of bubbly mucus in the mouth and hear popping or wheezing, then you do have a problem. This would indicate respiratory infections and/or mouth rot and the snake should be taken to a vet right away. Very mild cases of respiratory infection can be helped by increasing the temperature in the cage and the humidity as well (I think). But it is still best to get a vet check, as they can administer anti-biotics to combat the infections.
