Red mold/bacteria ?

invisiblemarker Jan 27, 2006 09:17 PM

I was cleaning out my two geckos tanks today (one leo; one african fat-tailed) and I noticed a redish hue to the paper towels in their wet hides and a redish slime in their water dishes after I wipped them out.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be or how to approch it? I suspect it might be something my crickets brought in.

I live in Alaska, so this time of year is dry. Both my geckos have paper towel substate with a heating rock, heating pad, dry hide, wet hide, water dish, and UV light.

I appricate any comments on this matter.

i dont know about the red slime but you should be very carefull with your heat rock as they can develop hot spots and can badly burn your leo

Yes, well that wasn't was I asked about. I've always used heat rocks and i've never had a problem with them.

I als onotice this when cleaning water bowls. Doesn't seem to be anything more serious than algae.

I have personally never had that issue with the water. How often are you changing the water? You should check the water daily for debris in the water. I change my water every other day to prevent any type of build up. All my geckos are housed seperatly, if you have more then 1 in the same cage a daily cleaning may be necessary. When I change the water I also wash the bowl with a antibacterial soap.
