Cage building update, with pics, not 56k friendly

colubrid-aphilia Jan 28, 2006 02:20 PM

Well, life happens so I have not been able to get out to the garage to get these things done. But, I now have them all done except for getting glass (stores are closed on the weekends) and figuring out what I am going to do with the heating.

Here is a shot of one half of the two cage sets all lit up with no place to go:

The lights I am using are a 12" flourescent undercounter or cabinet light, that has to be wired to 110 volts. I didn't want to have to worry about batteries all the time, so I chose to go with wired lights. Also I am able to now hook them into a power strip which is in turn plugged into a timer so that the lights come on and go off when I want them to.

This is a pic of the extension cord that has to be modified. ** Make sure to get a three prong, grounded plug and cord, the lights MUST be installed on a grounded circuit, naturally with a grounded plug. **

Ok, now you have dis-membered your brand new extension cord and probably feeling pretty bad about it, but it just has to be. Plan the routing of your power cable from your lights (you have them mounted where you want them at this stage). At the point where you are planning on going through the cage to the outside, get a drill bit that is just a frog-hair larger than your cord. Drill two holes side by side, as shown here:

Make the two holes you just drilled into one hole by pushing to the side with the drill untill it chews through the wood between the holes. Should look like this:

Feed the cord into the cage from the outside going in:

Route the wire to your mounted light fixture. If you look close on the pic, you can see that I had to use a half inch piece of the same wire in the clamp so that it would safely tighten down and hold the wire in place.

Make your three connections: Positive, Negative, and most importantly GROUND. Then it's just the matter of putting the light back together and plugging it in.

Both cages (two sets of two) were free. One of the grocery stores that I do HVAC service work for had them sitting out back in an old bakery rack / shelve setup. I talked to the manager and he said I could have them just to get them taken away.

PLEASE don't just go around and take stuff from stores without asking first.

They measure 48 x 12 x 12 (each cage section).
