Eating Habits

msonnenb Jul 25, 2003 07:32 PM

We've had a box turtle for over ten years. She lives on a large outdoor enclosure with plenty of vegetation. Every once in while, however, she becomes finicky and refuses to eat. She moves and looks normal. Is this finickiness a normal reaction?Do box turtles lose their appetite during mating season? What is a normal eating pattern for boxies?

They do lose their appetites during very warm weather. Most animals including humans also do this. Ever notice that you eat less in the hot summer months?

It could be the heat, she may be getting ready to lay eggs, she may benefit from a little variety in her diet...there are lots of variables.
Mating season seems to affect the males in my group more than females, but they're all different.
If she resumes her regular habits within a reasonable amount of time, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Stephanie
