update on Miss Lizzy (t. scincoides)

kiwisue Jul 25, 2003 07:37 PM

Hi everyone, and thanks for the concerned posts. Just when I was about to check out the Yahoo Fight Rooms for a little light relief from the skink forum, my faith in the forum has been restored (just.)

I am very pleased to report that Miss Lizzy is still with us this morning and looks pretty good apart from a couple of obvious small puncture holes, the worst being beneath her left ear. Her body looks OK and she's moving with normal speed, so I'm thinking maybe in my anxiety I imagined the abdomenal swelling. Of course it's early days yet with regard to infection, but will let you know how she does.

Fortunately I think I have one little tough lizard on my hands...hopefully she has more lives than the cat that bit her.

...I think the fact she was quite cold might have saved her life - she probably wasn't wriggling enough to be an interesting plaything for the cat, whom I'm assuming left her in disgust...plus her slowed metabolism would have stemmed the blood flow. I can't believe my husband found her by ACCIDENT on the grass! He called out "Susan, isn't this your lizard!!" (a fact not immediately apparent cos there are other wild blueys in the garden...but a quick check of the cage, sporting a gaping hole, answered that question for him...) I didn't even know she was MIA at that time. He thought she was dead, but having handled her a lot more, I knew she was just cold and probably in shock. How lucky is that!

This may be already noted, but yes, I believe Betadine is very appropriate for these injuries. I have Tortoises, and Betadine is recommended for most injuries, including broken shells with exposed internal areas. Clean out the bites as well as possible with the Betadyne, then apply an antibiotic gel, and keep her clean and cosy till they close up. They should heal from the inside out to avoid abcesses. Of course, she should see a vet, but this is what I would do with her until that time.
Just IMHO.
