humidity levels...

specialcay06 Jan 29, 2006 06:24 AM

Hey there...I've got a question. I was told that the humidity levels in my leo's tank should never get above 40%. However, mine seems to hover around 45%. I can't seem to get it lower! The only part of her tank that is moist is her humid hide. I don't keep her water dish over the UTH, either, so I'm not sure why the level stays up so high. Any suggestions??

As long as the only real moisture source is the humid hide you should be fine. Is your tank covered with a screen type top? If so, I wouldn't worry about it

Yes, I have a screen top on Mackie's tank, but I've covered about 2/3 of it with packing tape to keep the warm air in. (It was recommended to me because I was having problems with the air temp) Do you think that actually might be a bad idea? Could that be why the humidity is up???

Yes, that is more than likely why your humidity level is higher. The "air" temp isn't what you really need to monitor, it's the temp directly on top of the substrate on the warm side that you need to watch. As long as the warm side substrate is between 88-93 degrees everything else should be fine. If the cool side is too cool just add overhead lighting using an infrared bulb. The cool side should be around 77-80 during the day, and can safely drop to 70 at night as long as you maintain the warm side temps. Are you using an UTH (under tank heater) for the warm side?

yes, i've got a UTH. I don't have a thermometer on the substrate, but I have checked it...and on the warm side it's about 90 degrees. not real sure what it's like on the cool side. so I suppose I could just take the packing tape off, and keep the light on. I'll keep you posted! Thanks for your help
By the way, your website was one of the sites I used for my research before purchasing my gecko! So thanks for the great info!

Thank you so much for the compliment and I am thrilled to know it was of help It does sound like your warm side temps are good. I would still grab a digital thermometer when you get a chance, it's always nice to know for sure how the temps are doing on an ongoing basis. Good Luck !!
