Actual steps for bringing snakes out of brumation and breeding?

bmulcahy Jan 29, 2006 09:49 AM

Could someone give me a good timeline to start bringing my corns out of brumation? I know I should start soon. Right now all my corns are in my basement at 60 - 65 degrees.

Thanks!

Brian

How long have they been brumating?
Anyway, I can give you what I do.
Some may do it differently.
It works, so I will continue this way.
When I bring mine up from brumation I first bring them to their enclosures without heat tape, heat pads or tank lights turned on, simply room temps and normal room lighting for three days.
I then turn on their heat sources and set their tank lights for 12 hours a day.
So, after four days at regular temps and lighting (7 days total now) I begin feeding them.
The first meal will be smaller then usual.
In my case all my brumating snakes eat adults so I give them each a small hopper for their first meal.
If they hold this down I then begin them on a regular, to stepped-up, feeding regimen.
Some of my males may only eat small or medium adults, these I step up to the next size. For the ones that were already eating a large adult I will add a hopper to the meal.
With females I will continue them on their normal sized adult mouse and add a hopper to each meal.
As each pair has their post brumation sheds I place them together.
When I see them breed or find obvious signs of breeding I will then separate them.
After this I will return the males to regular feeding and continue the females on their "add-a-hopper" regimen.
Once the females start to cloud over for their post mating shed I place a laying box in their enclosures and wait for them to lay their eggs.
and from there we go to incubation and waiting and waiting and waiting for those little mouse traps to hatch.

Remember this is just MY way.
And in this case it is by no means "my way or the highway"
there are probably as many methods as there are breeders out there.

They have been brumating since early December. I don't use light in my tanks - Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Early December. I would give them a couple more weeks.
I take it you just use room light.
what about tank temps?
do you use any type of heat?

I use under tank heat pads. Each snake is in a 24 by 24 by 12 BARRS stackable cage (takes up less room in my class). I keep one side between 80 and 85 and the other side at 70.

Thanks for you advice!

Just bring them up and leave them for a few days in their tanks at room temps and then turn on their heat pads and let them warm up for a few more days. basically the same as I described above minus the lighting.
good luck
