How do you pick out killer bloods

thewho Jan 29, 2006 10:44 AM

For those of you with a lot of experience, what are things to look for in a baby blood that may give a hint that it will be a screamer? I know it's impossible to tell for sure, but what are some good indicating factors?

Thanks,
Matt

Well Matt-
As you intimated, your question is a bit like asking someone who's won, "how do you go about picking a winning lottery ticket?" Its one difficulty with farm-raised imports that is mitigated when you choose cbb from a reputable breeder; you get to "meet the parents". And on a positive note "any good blood is a good color". However, I confess I haven't nearly the experence with bloods that others on this forum have, so we'll both see if someone is willing to share their secret method...

Hey,
One sure fire method, is to have a look at the sire and dam and even take a look at some of the available off-spring from previous breedings and clutches of the sire dam. This is a great barometer toward gauging what the off-spring might turn out like. Kevin Marter is a perfect example of that suggestion. He's been able to consistently produce some of the most outstanding bloods around, and there are also, some of his pairs progeny lurking around in the blood forum on some of the earlier post. Check out the search engine here and type in a search regarding Marter bloods. I'm sure you'll get lots of hits, with lots of sample photos.

Hey,
Forgot to mention, that the sample photos are all of Marter bloods as babies and juvies and even, some sample photos of subadults. They are all amazing. I don't think that his pair has produced one lousy looking blood yet to date. They are all winners. Also, take a look at some of Kara's babies. I'll post some of mine a bit later and you will see from the photos of them, that they were pretty easy to gauge whether they would turn into winners or not.

Hey, THANKS A LOT Angel, I really appreciate the kind words. I agree with you Angel,if you are able to see pics of the parents,it will definately give one a good idea of what a young Blood will turn out like. At about 3 months of age, after they have gone through the first shed cycle, if the color of a particular Blood seems to glow,or just jump off it,in compairson to others you have seen,it will likely be a keeper. Hope this helps Matt.Good luck finding a nice one. BUY CBB!!!

I by all means don't consider myself an expert, however this is how I have been picking out my red blood (BRONGERSMAI) collection.1) Angel is right about looking at the parents and previouse offspring.A great indicator of genetics.2) Try to pick out the most orange looking animal in the clutch. Not yellow, orange.Orange turns into a nice bright red.Yellow usually stays yellow if there is no red or orange pigment.A lot of people try to pick out the darkest most red/brown animal thinking that the red will intensify.Yes the red will intensify usually into a darker brown.DISCLAIMER.....There are of course exceptions of really red animals being born red.(Marter bloods).Very rare.Their color only seems to get richer into a OXBLOOD color.I have also seen really drab brown babies turn red latter as adults. So you never really know. This method is WHAT I LOOK FOR IN picking baby red bloods.Check with N.E.R.D (Kara) always has beautiful light animals and so does V.P.I (Tracy).I know their striped line het hypo's are gonna be red screamers when they grow up.
GOOD LUCK...Oh yeah buy Captive Bred Only !!!! Ash Lopez

Here are some of my animals.Sorry I went a little crazy.
