venom storage

venombill Jan 29, 2006 02:31 PM

My MicroBiology teacher asked if I could bring in some venom from a rattlesnake, my question is after we extract the venom this afternoon, should I go ahead and freeze it or store it in the frig. My class isn't till 3:30 tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for the help. Billy

It depends on what the venom is to be used for. But instead of going into this in detail I think the more appropriate answer is if you don't know what to do with the venom once you have it, you have no reason to be stressing the snake and have no business doing this.

I can see it now, bio teacher gets sued as hospital patient fights to pay the bills...

j/k, I"m sure you know what you're doing if you're asking the question. Since this likely isn't about to be used in any vastly important experiment, the fridge should be fine if collection is done cleanly. The goal is to limit bacterial growth.

Ian, perhaps Dr. Fry has a better answer
