Mating corns help

mack1time Jan 29, 2006 04:47 PM

K i have a 4 foot charcoal corn and a 3 foot snow corn snake. I just introduced the smaller corn to the other cage. I have never gotton them sexed but the larger one keep chasing the other then mounting and trying to wrap his tail around the small snow. I think i seen something pertruding through the vent. Now should i leave them together? the smaller one seems hesitant and keeps fleeing the males attempts and could possibly be a male or a female thats not ready? any advice would be appreciated

Females shed their skin following brumation. It is at this time that they are ready to breed. After the post-brumation shed, I leave my pairs together for 2-3 weeks, allowing them to mate multiple times. I seperate them for feeding during this time.

Honestly, my advice would be to get them sexed. In my opinion, it could be stressful if you have two males and the one keeps bugging the other or if you have one female and she is not ready to mate. Is "the smaller one" the proper size for mating? Did you brumate them? I tried my first year without brumation and my females refused to mate. Get them sexed, make sure they are the proper size for breeding and go from there.

dont worry too much about brumation. i have never brumated my corns until this year and i have always gotton very good clutches (1st year -23,2nd -25,3rd- 18(my female escaped for 3 weeks just after mating)4th -25) so as you can see brumation is not required but most say it is beneficial.
i should also note that if you are not sure of what you are doing or dont have someone to help you you shouldnt try it.....
but we all learned somehow so....
you will need to at this point figure out how to house the young , get a supply of frozen pinkies, get a hovabator and a good thermometer get some vermiculite and sphagnum moss you should also get a smaller container to place the eggs in the incubater with. if you need any help or have any questions dont hesitate to post or email im here to help. thats what these forums are for......
