Can Turtles Fly in an airplane safely?

megamer Jul 25, 2003 08:39 PM

Hi,

I have two RES's, about 1 yr old each. I'm visiting my sister in TX in a week, and I want to take my Turtles with me on the plane. Will they handle the air pressure differences OK? If so, is there anything else I need to know to take them with me safely?

I'd appreciate any quick responses - because if I can't take them, I have to quick make other plans for them.

Thank You!

I'm not sure [well...pretty sure] but I think you aren't allowed to take any kind of reptiles on planes. Check with the airlines you plan to fly on.

Well I baught my 2 RES as babies in Chinatown NY, and flew them on over to California without a problem.

Of course this was in 1997 before September 11th... however I'm pretty sure they still let you take it on the plane with you. The way I did it (my RES were babies and I kept them in that plastic crap container they give you heh) was put a spunge andabout half inch of water in it and put it in a paper grocery bag. The lady who checked the "bag" looked at the turtles and checked to see if I was hiding drugs in it or somethign haha

Anyways my turtles are nice and healthy and didn't seem to have problems with the flight. It was really long to (NY to CA). I might not have known any proper methods to get my turtles on the plane but anywhoo they made it and I'm happy 6 years later

I'm pretty sure reptiles generally aren't welcome as carry-on... you don't want to find that out when you're at the gate. It's really stupid because you can carry-on dogs. I'd call ahead and make sure you tell them it's a turtle. Maybe they're not worried about turtles running amok or being used as a weapon, so you might get lucky.

Thanks for the replies about taking my RES's on the plane flight. Unfortunately - many of the replies were correct in that the airlines won't let you take reptiles as carry-on. I can understand why they don't want certain kinds of reptiles. But it's too bad they don't allow certain kinds of reptiles. My turtles definitely would've been less of a problem compared to the cats and dogs that were stuffed in carry-on pet carriers under the seats! Oh-well. My mom took care of our turtles for us, and did a pretty good job. (Although she can't understand WHY we like having pet turtles!

Thanks again for the replies.

Southwest, at least, does not allow reptiles in the cabin.
