Does RepCal contain trace amounts of lead?

Ghosty-O Jan 29, 2006 11:08 PM

I realize that RepCal has been a trusted name in supplements for reptiles for quite some time. However, I recently acquired a bearded dragon and in an effort to provide the best care I purchased RepCal based on the recommendations of members at various forums. While looking at the label I noticed that it read "REP-CAL contains only 100% Natural phosphorus-free oyster shell Calcium Carbonate for its calcium source."

I immediately recalled reading information that oyster shells often contained very high amounts of lead. So off to the internet I went. And indeed, I had remembered correctly. I found quite a few sites that indicate that oyster shells are high in lead content. So I decided to email the company that makes RepCal, but oddly enough, there is no email contact provided at the site-only a phone number, which I will try tomorrow. I'd really like to find out if this supplement has any traces of lead in it. Does anyone have any idea how I can go about this?

Sounds like you are on the right track. Call the company.
Does lead effect reptiles like it does humans?

I am quite sure lead will be toxic to reptiles as it is to other animals, including humans. Lead poisoning affects mammals and birds that I know of for sure, even fish as well. As it never leaves the body, it eventually builds up to toxic levels. Same with mercury. However, I haven't heard anything about Rep Cal containing levels of lead or bearded dragons dying from lead poisoning. I am sure there are ways to remove the lead content of oyster shells before using them. However the company that makes Rep Cal should be able to answer the question. Keep us posted.

hmmmm something to look deeply into, but i think that it would contain more mercury than lead.
