Gecko refusing to eat - depressed???

astroturf Jan 30, 2006 01:48 AM

Awrighty, so my male, Diplo, broke his wrist and dislocated his radius. At the time he was housed with a female. After the vet visit, he got set up in an entirely new tank in a new house, without the female. We decided to not set and cast his leg as he has been using it and placing weight on it. Intially (about the first week) he was eating after the move... however he has stopped for the past couple weeks, and has noticably lost weight. He will show a slight initial interest in food, but will not bite down on anything. Today he finally just closed his eyes at me!!!! His temps are normal (88-93F on the warm side, 65-75F on the cool side depending on the house temperature) and what little poo he has had looks normal.

Has anyone had such a reaction with a gecko after injuries or separation with tank mates??? I will be talking to his vet this week to see what she thinks, but she does not have a ton of experience with these guys. any thoughts would be appreciated.

a worried gecko mom

ps - i have not started force feeding yet, but i will probably pick up some pedialyte in the next couple days to make sure he is getting electrolytes (he will lick it off of his lips)

Have you taken him back to the vet to see if maybe the leg needs more attention? Or told the vet of him not eating?

So I did talk with my vet... we decided that I will try forcefeeding him for a while, and if his appetite doesnt perk up in about a week, we will try and splint the leg. Poor guy... he definetly was not very happy with me today. Hopefully I can find him some waxworms out there!
