Other herps in grayband territory

mssdds Jan 30, 2006 05:09 PM

We were wondering if any of the herpers who frequent West Texas have found any bairdis and/or pictagasters on River Road. If not, what would seem to be the western-most extensions for both species? Thanks for your time.

I have observed bairdi in the Chisos Mtns and have seen several pictigaster near the old stone house west of Lajitas in the late 70's and early 80's. These are as west for these species as I am aware of.

I know of bairdi off of 118 and would expect that some have come off of the river road, but don't know of any first hand. They are certainly in the Chisos.

Pictigaster are found on the River Road, particularly right by the river. The westernmost recorded locale for this species is in the Chinati Mts.

Bairdi are not found on the River Road (too low, too dry) although I've heard a rumor that one has been found in the Xmas Mts. Bairdi have also been recorded from the Chinati Mts, however (west of the River Road) - they are mostly restricted to higher elevations where there are Oak Trees.

I found a Baird's on River Road right outside Lajitas 4 or 5 years ago. It was active before dusk on a humid overcast day in October. It's the only one I've seen in 30 years on River Road.
