What kind of toad is it?

Grunngg Jan 30, 2006 07:04 PM

I was at a PetsMart today and saw a tank labeled "Large Toad" and the latin name was Bufo spp. I'm not sure what that is. Anyone know? Also, they had a Cuban Treefrog. I thought they were illegal or something?

That's a pretty vague description from a pet store. Bufo is a large genus that includes many different species of toads. The sp. after Bufo stands for species, so basically they are implying that it is a member of the genus Bufo. I would guess that it might be Bufo marinus, more commonly known as the cane toad, marine toad, or giant toad, could be another species though.

Cuban tree frogs are an invasive species in Florida and Georgia. There may be local laws in many areas of the south that prohibit their sale because they have been so successful in Florida, but there aren't any federal restrictions on the species that I'm aware of. They make hardy captives and are a good tree frog to keep, just need to make sure they stay in their cage and don't go roaming outside!

I don't think its a Cane Toad. Fromm the pictures ive seen the Cane Toad is a brownish color. This toad is a really dark green color. Oh well. You would think theyd be a little more descriptive.

I've seen the same thing just a few days ago from a national chain store with anoles, a few tree toads and a bufo sp with it. When I asked if they knew mixing speicies was bad, they said you can do that with captive herps. Riiight.
Getting back to the original question. Bufo is a toad genius, ssp is short for species. Translation, they dont have a clue. The toad I saw looked like a bufo viridis (green toad)
