50/50 tank?

chamsrcool Jul 25, 2003 09:50 PM

im not sure since this is dart frogs but does anyone have experience in making 50/50 tanks for frogs?(half water half land?)

anyways i want to make one only instead of the vertical divider iwanted a horizontal divider...well more of a shelf....ill try to explane.

i was think a 20 gallon tall (30 gallon tall if there is one) lets say it is 2 foot long i would put a shelf that was a foot long in it alittle lower than half way from the top...have i lost you yet?

Anyways the set up would have the bottom full of water with small fish or two...the shelf would have pea gravel or moss ...somthing...and their would be a potho sittin gon the shelf...i would have two anoles in the top part..(other decor for them)

I was wondering if it is possible to make a tank with a shelf

and how much would it cost....i allready have plexiglass.

dont put anoles in with dart frogs, they arent even from the same portion of the world.

for the devider if i am understanding right, i dont think i am. its laste and i got to get up EARLY, why dont you use a large rock or something? its more natural click my link to see how i "divided" the laft portion of my tank.

As for the 50/50 its not needed. streams are cool. dart arent aquatic or semi. iv heard some like to set in the moving water but depending on what specie you get, say tincs for example. if you have two females and they fight one could pin the other under water and kill it. they can die in 1/4" of water (if pinned).

I wasn't putting frogs in the tank...i asked here becuase people with frogs usually make 50/50 tanks for like fire bellies and others not dart frogs...i just posted here becuase it is the most active..

anyways i wanted water to be below the shelf so lets say its a 20 gallon tall about 10 gallons of water in the bottom then a plexiglass shelf that covers half of the surface then about 10 gallons of air with decorations.

i was wondering if anyone has any thing like this. our zoo does but nothing live in the open air space and it is a huge aquarium...the air space is just for plants.

I wouldn't reccommend it. Anoles don't swim and could easily drowned. If you must have soemthing on the land try salamanders or newts.

Here's something that worked for me. This paludarium is a lot larger than what you plan-135 gallons--but it is divided with glass between aquarium and land. The glass is siliconed in place. Behind the glass barriers, the land is terraced up from a false bottom that allows drainage. In this case, there are two water falls, one at the far right end and another into the "lagoon" in the center. The water is circulated back around from a pump at the left end. The water flows down over glass barriers from 14 inches on the right to 8 inches deep on the left. The land portion contains Dendrobates galactonotus darts and the water portion has some small fish such as playts, tetras, and some algae eaters. The frogs do (rarely) fall into the water, but each section has a branch for easy egress, so they can climb right out. Although not aquatic, they are able to swim. I don't know if this would be a problem with anoles, but you definitely want a way for them to climb out in case of an accidental dunking.
