Love is in the air.........

rainbowsrus Jan 31, 2006 01:48 AM

I love this time of year, My BRB's decided to let me know my clock was off a week. In the past I have run the "cool" cycle from Thanksgiving to Valentines day. This year I started it a week early and was planning on running up the temps in about a week. So far this winter they have been ravenous. A typical week would only have one or two females not eat and the males would eat about every other week. The females that refused were as I remember ALWAYS in shed. Last week was normal, all the females except two in shed ate like pigs. This week (the two had shed) 5 of 7 of the females refused food. Woohoo, hint number one that they are getting ready to go.

And if that was not enough, I also found sperm plugs in one of the water bowls. Hint number two!!

I guess it's time to crank up the heat and let the games begin!!!!!!

5 - I can cut back on rat production

4 - My time spent feeding just dropped by 25%
(still have babies, yearlings and my BCI project)

3 - I get to watch all the breeding activity, snake porn anyone?

2 - Breeding usually leads to babies.

and my number 1 reason I like this time of year......

What they don't eat, they don't poop out the other end.

It's been a long 5 months this last "feeding season". They were usually ravenous and I almost always had food for them. Of course eating most every week led to each messing their individual cages about twice a week. Lotsa, lotsa cage cleaning been going on.

Good for you Dave (grumble, grumble, grumble). This is usually the longest part of the year for me because I have to hear about all you guys and your snake breeding. My animals never go until spring.

This year, I'm going to try your cooling regimen. I'll bring up the heat on Valentine's Day. I was thinking though, I wonder if I get later breedings because I heat my cages with flexwatt. Dave, since you heat with lights, you are raising the air temperature of the cage. I'm basically only heating a surface. I'm thinking my animals don't go until spring because that's when their ambient temperatures start to rise.

Any thoughts?

By the way, I'm joking. You know I wish you the best.

Mike

well, I might agree with you except I had NOT started the warming cycle. I think it may have more to do with how long they've been cooled. Sort of hardwired into the genes. Anticipating the warm cycle which must be just around the corner since they've been cool for 10 going on 11 weeks. My planned cycle was 12ish weeks.

You know, I have one female who has refused her last two meals. Maybe christmas will come early this year.

It is easier to notice trends when you have a whole colony of adults. I've started my warming trend and we'll see whayt happens.

BTW, both of your babies ate for me np, gave them small meals and they both pounced asap.
